Back to work scheme for young people applauded

29/01/2010

A new government initiative to help young people get back into work has been given the thumbs up.

Becci Newton of the Institute for Employment Studies said the Care First Careers initiative will help many young Brits kick-start their careers after the effects of the economic downturn could have hampered many people's prospects in recent months.

She commented: "If [employers] are matched with young people who have a real interest in gaining skills and experience things could work out well."

Ms Newton added the financial incentive of the programme might also make more companies interested. However, it is possible that a wider package of support may be needed if the scheme is to truly flourish.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, the number of Brits claiming jobseeker's allowance in November fell by 6,300 to 1.63 million.

This is good news as it is the first monthly contraction in the figure since February 2008.
