British Gas to create 2,600 jobs
UK energy supplier British Gas has pledged to create 2,600 new positions by 2012 as part of its push to bring smart meters into every UK home.
The project, which is due to get underway sometime next year, will see technicians enter millions of properties across the UK in order to fit green meters which will enable UK households to monitor their energy consumption more closely.
Of the new positions which are being created, the company noted that 2,100 staff will be trained as "smart engineer experts", while 400 will become supporting team members and 130 new managerial roles.
The company has hailed the installation of these new green meters as the biggest shake-up in the UK energy sector since the discovery of North Sea gas in the 1970s.
Scottish and Southern Energy also recently announced that it plans to take on hundreds of new staff due to its successful bid for the construction of two new hydroelectric plants in the Scottish Highlands.
