Career breaks 'could benefit business'

03/12/2009

UK employers are beginning to realise that letting their employees head off on career breaks can make good business sense in the long run, it has been claimed.

Rachel Morgan-Trimmer, founder of the Career Break Site, said companies can benefit from the new skills an employee learns while travelling and this can be brought back to enrich the skills of the firm in general.

Also, Ms Morgan-Trimmer commented: "A lot of people are determined to see the world and it is much cheaper to let them [employees] take a career break than hire someone new."

According to research carried out by Office Angels, over one-third (34 per cent) of Scamps - individuals who are Swapping Careers and Money for Passport Stamps - admit to being unsatisfied with their current job role, making the prospect of travelling much more appealing.

Indeed, nearly one in ten (nine per cent) say they would like to try new experiences, such as getting involved with community and ethical projects or overseas volunteer work.
