Green jobs 'key to environmental policy'

29/04/2010

Promoting the uptake of green jobs in the UK is important if environmental policies are to stick, it has been claimed.

Tony Rooke, environmental manager for Logica, said the green agenda has been one which has played a key role in the political posturing in the run-up to the general election so far.

However, by incorporating this issue into the roles of Brits' jobs across the country, the profile of sustainability could be raised further.

He commented: "I think one key way of making [sustainability] more popular is to actually make more jobs have a component of or be related to the sustainability industry."

According to the Green Party manifesto, it hopes to introduce incentives totalling £2 billion per annum to encourage homes to become more energy self-sufficient.

The party plans to achieve this by aiming for one million solar roofs and to support general feed-in tariffs for microgeneration, creating 40,000 jobs in the installation industries.
