Mandatory degree for nursing to be introduced
Individuals entering the nursing and midwifery profession will soon have to be educated to degree level, it has been revealed.
Rosie Doy, deputy head of the University of East Anglia School of Nursing and Midwifery, said this is a positive step for the profession.
However, there remain concerns in some quarters that this will lead to a decline in patient care, as although nurses will be more technically proficient and knowledgeable, it remains to be seen whether they will have the same skills in providing care.
She commented: "I can see why the industry is divided - as in; will this make nurses 'too clever to care'? But a significant proportion of nurses in the profession are already graduate nurses."
According to the Department of Health, from 2013, the minimum level for pre-registration courses for nurses will be raised from diploma to degree level and these courses will meet new standards developed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
