Migrating workers could 'create more jobs in the UK'

19/11/2008

Online recruitment agencies could find that more jobs are being made available to those using their services as some overseas workers begin to migrate back to their own countries, it has been suggested.

According to the Local Government Association (LGA), there has been a great deal of migration into London over the past three years.

However, this will begin to go into reverse and there will be vacancies which will need to be filled when the UK comes out of the recession.

A spokesperson for the LGA said: "It will be the migrants going back to Poland and Eastern Europe so you will get [the jobs they did whilst here] not being filled."

He also said that the organisation expects rehiring to pick up in 2010.

According to the LGA's report, 'from recession to recovery: the local dimension', major cities such as Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds are likely to fare better than London during the recession.
