More jobseekers search online for Christmas temp jobs

11/11/2008

More jobseekers are using online recruitment sites to look for temporary retail jobs over the Christmas period, it has been found.

According to the Times, one e-recruitment agency has seen the number of holiday job searches rise from 14,100 to nearly 59,000 this year.

Likewise, a student jobs website found that in September and October, there was a 45 per cent increase in the number of retailers using its services to advertise vacancies compared to the same time in 2007.

Chris Eccles, a director of one4s.co.uk, said that the continued use of online recruitment sites "shows that retailers are still hiring, despite the gloomy forecasts for this Christmas".

Similarly, Ed Watson, a spokesperson for Debenhams, also attributed the surge in job applications to people wanting some extra Christmas cash during the credit crunch.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported that some retailers are being forced to start sales early to attract shoppers.
