Mothers 'should keep in touch during maternity'

01/12/2009

Mothers who leave the office for maternity should keep in touch with their employer to ensure the role they come back to is equal to the one they left.

Parenting expert Catherine Hanly said mothers who are willing to stay in contact with the office are more likely to return to a role that is suited to them, as reminding their employer they will be back ensures they are kept in mind when decisions are made during their absence.

She commented: "Anecdotally, I'm sure most people know someone who returned to work after maternity leave and found that their position had changed or that they were edged out of the decision making process."

According to a recent survey by the National Childbirth Trust, 31 per cent of women said their relationship with their boss had deteriorated since they had become pregnant.

In addition, it found that returning to work after maternity leave is still quite a difficult task for many mothers.
