'No decline' in UK-based Australian workers

08/12/2008

Jobs in the UK remain in high demand among Australian workers, it has been suggested.

Recruiter magazine has highlighted figures which show that the number of Australians returning to their home country has fallen since last year.

The figures appear to contradict a report by the Times in which it was suggested that many are returning to Australia to escape the economic downturn in the US.

Those in the recruitment industry also appear to be at odds with the newspaper, claiming that there has been no fall in interest in UK-based employment from Australian applicants.

For example, in the education sector, "while there is in many subjects there is a surplus of teachers, in London, there is always a need for teachers," said Jon Dunn of Arete.

Meanwhile in Australia, the government last week published a new bill intended to protect workers from overseas on temporary visas.
