Recession leading to lies on CVs, society claims

25/02/2009

The recession could be encouraging jobseekers to lie on their CVs in order to secure employment, one organisation believes.

In the opinion of the Recruitment Society, it is "probably easier" for people to lie on their applications at the moments because they believe everyone else is doing the same thing.

Furthermore, the embellishments can be subtle, meaning it is difficult for any potential employers to spot when an applicant is making something up.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, claims that these lies could be as small as a person exaggerating the role they played in a team project.

He said: "There's less chance that people are going to be caught out, unless it's very obvious things – dates being the classic ones."

A recent CV survey conducted by the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors discovered that 22.8 per cent of people have lied on their CV.
