Recruitment recovery 'should be celebrated'

12/03/2010

A recovery in the recruitment sector should be being celebrated. However, the hangover from recession has meant many in the industry remain cautious, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for Jobsite said the fact the economic downturn hit so many sectors so hard and fast means recruiters have taken a battering in the last few months and they are therefore now more reticent about recovery and do not want to get their hopes raised too quickly.

The representative commented: "There definitely seems to be a fear of running before you can walk but we think these slight positive increments will gain momentum over the coming months."

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, the employment rate for October to December 2009 was 72.4 per cent, down 0.1 on the quarter.

Furthermore, there were 1.04 million employees and self-employed people working part-time because they could not find a full-time job. This is the highest figure since records for this series began in 1992.
