Report identifies gaps in backgrounds of top professionals

15/04/2009

Social and educational backgrounds are major factors in the likelihood of success in top professions, according to a new report.

Those who have been educated at independent schools or come from wealthier families are statistically more likely to succeed in careers in law, medicine, media, publishing, the civil service and banking, the Panel on Fair Access to the Professions found.

The report revealed that the income gap between the families of professionals born in 1958 and the average family at the time was 17 per cent, but this margin grows to 27 per cent for those born in 1970.

"While progress has been made, there is still a long way to go to ensure that all young people get a fair crack of the whip when it comes to pursuing a professional career," commented Alan Milburn MP, chair of the panel.

The Panel on Fair Access to the Professions was set up in January to run beside the government's new opportunities white paper and includes members such as KPMG's Neil Sherlock ITV executive chairman Michael Grade.
