Shortages remain, despite downturn in jobs
Many industries across the UK are still calling out for graduates despite the economic downturn putting a squeeze on many areas, it has been revealed.
Chris Cater, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, said that due to a shortfall in the number of people studying the appropriate areas, some firms will not be able to fill all their graduate scheme positions this year.
He commented: "We've got a shortage of electrical engineers and a shortage of civil engineers, we also have shortages in food science. We basically need graduates to graduate from those areas to fill the positions."
According to research from the Association of Graduate Recruiters, the majority of employers (52 per cent) continue to offer in excess of ten paid internship and apprenticeship places every year.
Furthermore, retention of between 91 and 100 per cent of graduates taken onto graduate schemes in the last year was achieved by 71 per cent of organisations.
