'Spend time sensibly' when looking for work

22/07/2009

Young people looking for work in the UK have been advised to spend their time effectively when looking for a job.

Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, said that graduates should not waste their time applying for jobs which they are unlikely to get.

He commented: "It is not enough necessarily to just have a degree, there is lots of other things employers are looking for and there are things that you can do to help you stand out."

Mr Hadley added that gaining practical experience in fields relevant to the job which an individual wishes to get can be one of the best ways to stay ahead of the pack.

According to the Learning and Skills Council, 84 per cent of young people are presently worrying about their future career prospects.

The same research showed that more than half (52 per cent) of UK parents are presently worried that their children will not find the right job for them.
